Lynda Barry is my new creative crush. I just finished her hugely inspiring book What It Is, and I am filled with possibilities. The book is part memoir as she tells us the story of how she came to be an artist and part creative workshop as much of the content is based on her creativity workshop, Writing the Unthinkable. Peek inside What It Is with this preview from the publisher.
A few links for your reading pleasure:
- Here is a blog post about two people’s experience at the workshop back in 2008.
- How to Think Like a Surreal Cartoonist is a NY Times article about Lynda Barry.
- Here is an NPR interview with Lynda Barry from 2002 after her memoir One Hundred Demons came out.
- The Picky Girl reviews What It Is. She says, “Be prepared to pore over the pages.”
Thanks for the suggestion! I’m really excited to check this book. I also really like Amanda Powell’s “Capture 30 Days” (capture30days.com) and Julia Cameron’s “Vein of Gold.”
My last creative crush was Ariel Gore. Her book How to Become a Famous Writer Before You’re Dead was very inspiring to me.
