If you’re not out shopping for Black Friday deals today, you may at least be starting to think about what you are going to give this holiday season now that Thanksgiving is over. As you might imagine, I like to give books. :)
Here are a few ideas for you to give books this year too.
Gift Books for Little Kids:
- I like to stick with the basics. The cute basics. LMNO Peas and 1-2-3 Peas by Keith Baker are about as adorable as vegetables get, and they introduce numbers and letters as a bonus. If your style is more retro than cute, try Apple Pie ABC and One, Two That’s My Shoe by Alison Murray.
Gift Books for Bigger Kids:
- If you have a favorite childhood classic, I think something personal makes the best gift. But if you need some ideas, try a Besty-Tacy Treasury, Winnie the Pooh, or Pippi Longstocking.
Gift Books for Future Scientists:
- Young animal lovers might like Unusual Creatures: A Mostly Accurate Account of Some of Earth’s Strangest Animals by Michael Hearst. It’s funny, but also has lots of good information. If that isn’t quite your style, try National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry. The stunning photographs are worth it by themselves, and the poetry is just a bonus! :)
- You can get kids involved in real science right now with Citizen Scientists by Loree Griffin Burns. All you have to do is observe the creatures in your own backyard. Give this one with some of the supplies for the science projects in the book and you have a great gift!
Gift Books for Grown-Up Science Buffs:
- I blogged about 50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True a while back, and I think it would make a great gift for anyone interested in science or skepticism.
- I have yet to see more of A Little History of Science by William Bynum than the Amazon preview allows, but it starts out highly readable. Not to mention, all the reviews I’ve seen have been glowing.
Gift Books for Artists, Poets, & Musicians:
- Remember I Saw a Peacock with a Fiery Tail from this post? Perfect gift book for anyone interested in poetry, language, or design.
- Record Collecting for Girls kind of limits the audience in the title, but it’s a great book for anyone interested in indie music (of either gender). I blogged about it here and here.
- Everyone is talking about How Music Works by David Byrne. I haven’t seen this one yet, but it may be worth checking out for the musician in your life.
