M83 is a band I blame on my husband. He isn’t responsible for the band’s existence (though I wouldn’t put it past him), but he certainly is the reason I’m listening to them right now.
Before the Dawn Heals Us was released in 2005, which was year one of our marriage, and Chad played it constantly. Despite the repeat plays, I just never quite connected. Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. Until we saw them live. They played at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis in April 2005. We went with a small group of friends and acquaintances, and honestly I was more of a tag-along than anything.
I wish I could think of a non-cliche way to describe the experience. I want to say “encompassing” or “overwhelming” in a positive sense, but that isn’t right. I’ll just say this: After that night, I was no longer remotely “meh” about the band.
You can see for yourself, virtually at least. Here is M83’s set from Coachella via Pitchfork. [Edited to add: Unfortunately, the video has since disappeared from YouTube. Too bad. It was a great performance!]
What live music experiences have changed the way you felt about a band?
